This book was born out of the author’s search for knowledge of Igbo culture and tradition in relation to the traditional way of resolving conflicts. It was a yawning for an understanding of how Igbo people of Nigeria resolve disputes, conflicts, and fracas as they arise in their traditional society that have kept the society together in harmony. Umunna is an Igbo word from the Eastern part of Nigeria. They are one of the institutions in Igbo traditional society who have resolved conflicts going down to the root of the conflict. Umunna is a powerful institution established for the sole purpose of administration and good governance in Igbo land, with a legislative and judicial role. They act as peace-makers and have kept the community running smoothly, controlling the oppression and exclusion of weaker people from the stronger in the society.
