Survey of Free-range Animals Within Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Zoological Garden

A survey of the free range inhabitants of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta zoological park came to the fore as a result of the need to document the wildlife species that inhabits the over sixty- two hectares of near natural forest which houses the institution’s zoological garden and Park. The research work was carried out for a period of five months (August – December 2017) by direct count method using established trails as transects. A total of four transects were combed twice daily every 14 days for the whole period of the survey. The results revealed a total of 272 animals as free range inhabitants of the zoo park and whose home range is the sprawling expanse of land on which the zoo currently sits. These environment has offered a refuge for these wildlife species as a result of the protection offered them through the no-hunting and anti-poaching activities of the zoo park.
