Description

The book examines the issue of the increasingly apparent under-representation and underachievement in education by male students in many parts of the world with emphasis on male students in the African Diaspora. It is explored the consequences and the underlying factors impacting on male students and seeks to provide practical guides for students, teachers, parents, families, communities, and policy leaders to narrow the gender gap in education to the benefit of both male and female students contrary to current orthodoxy that presumes that gender imbalance in education affects only the females adversely. From a perspective of complementarity which suggests that gender imbalance affects all adversely no matter which gender is bearing the brunt primarily at any point in time, authors explore the concepts of gender, femininity and masculinity to highlight how they are articulated, disarticulated and rearticulated in intersections with race or ethnicity and gender in the life chances of individuals and groups and how these concepts could be practically deployed for increased academic success and success in all walks of life.
