Postpartum depression (PPD) is a non–psychotic mood disorder that can affect women during perinatal period to one year after childbirth. Many women suffer silently from PPD due to the little emphasis placed on the emotional and psychological care with a global statistic of 10-20%, the prevalence is estimated to be higher in Africa at 10-32% with 11 and 13% reported in Kenya. PPD burden in our Kenyan setting is unknown. Despite dire effects of PPD on both the health of the mother and child, minimal interventions occur in most health facilities. This book presents new knowledge on the prevalence of PPD and the barriers to early detection and treatment. This knowledge will help increase awareness, provide data for future reference, and guide in planning for early intervention by policy makers’ hence overt prolonged morbidity and improve child survival. The book further presents recommendations and possible prevention measures.
