This study investigates the pivotal issue of student engagement with career counseling services at universities in Nairobi City County, Kenya, within the context of a competitive job market. Despite career counseling being essential for enhancing student employability and guiding career paths, participation rates in these services are notably low.
Utilizing qualitative methods, including student observations and interviews with career counselors across four universities, the research identifies key initiatives aimed at increasing student involvement. These initiatives include marketing efforts and awareness programs to educate students about available resources.
The findings emphasize the need for greater visibility of career counseling services to drive higher student participation. Additionally, the study advocates for the recruitment of more career counselors to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the evolving employment landscape. Furthermore, building strong relationships with alumni and potential employers is essential in elevating institutional visibility and aiding graduates’ transitions into the workforce.
