Determination of Heavy Metals in Soils of Some Dump Sites in Lafia Metropolis

The levels of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn) in soils of three dump sites (A, B and C) in Lafia were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric (AAS) method. The concentrations of the heavy metals ranged from 1.66-4.197, 0.084-0.310, 0.002-0.011, 0.431-0.944, 65.351-107.777, 0.065-0.099, 3.724-10.325 and 0.353-0.805 for Pb, Ni, Cd, […]

Description

The levels of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn) in soils of three dump sites (A, B and C) in Lafia were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric (AAS) method. The concentrations of the heavy metals ranged from 1.66-4.197, 0.084-0.310, 0.002-0.011, 0.431-0.944, 65.351-107.777, 0.065-0.099, 3.724-10.325 and 0.353-0.805 for Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn and As, respectively. Some physicochemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity, particle size, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon and organic matter) of the soils were also determined. The pH values of this study were within the normal soil pH values of 5.5–7.5. Electrical conductivity values were extremely saline (70 to 140 µS/cm). The particle size distribution of the soil showed that the soil contained higher composition of sand than silt and clay in all the sampling sites, and may be an indication why the heavy metals concentrations in soils were low since sandy soils with bigger particle sizes have small surface area for adsorption of the metals.
