Lake ecosystems are home to a wide variety of plant and animal species and provide essential goods and services to local populations. However, these ecosystems are facing environmental challenges due to human activities, endangering their ecological functioning. This study on the vegetation and carbon stock of riparian strips revealed that the biodiversity and carbon storage potential of these ecosystems are considerable and underline the potential of lake ecosystems as natural carbon sinks. With a wide variety of macrophytic, herbaceous and woody species identified, it is crucial to preserve these ecosystems in the Guinean highlands of Cameroon to maintain the ecological balance, ensure the supply of fresh water and preserve biodiversity in this region considered to be Cameroon’s water tower.
