The Holy Father has himself made it crystal clear that the issue of environmental degradation that Laudato Si’ depicts is not more of an environmental concern, per se, than it represents an anthropological crisis at its core. It is anthropological because mankind is both the object and the subject of the matter, which is to say, the main perpetrator and the outright victim of the degradation process and the deteriorating harmonious outlook of the ecosystem. Hence the reason the Laudato Si’ Encyclical was discussed in this book as a social justice subject matter that belongs to the corpus of the conventional Social Magisterium of the Church. As a Social Magisterium of its own right, Laudato Si’, through the lenses of the different contributors in this book, echoes the cry of the earth and that of the poor and opens our minds to the need for justice for both the poor, our likeness, and the earth, our natural habitat.
