Across a wide terrain of disciplines and perspectives, the terms globalisation and human rights encapsulate two of the most prominent areas of concern. Both these areas of scholarly inquiry have generated a voluminous literature. However, there are still areas of inquiry in the scholarly literature on globalisation and human rights that remain insufficiently developed. One such gap in the literature concerns the compatibility between human rights and Islam and how human rights-related institutions and policies are globally enforced. This book seeks to engage with the various debates surrounding globalisation, human rights and Islam, challenging assumptions of a “standard” or “essential” Muslim perspective on human rights. It studies human rights and Islam as two separate issues but also highlights their interaction. It attempts to dispel the stereotypical image of Islam as inherently rigid and inflexible. The book also explores the relevance of globalisation for human rights in countries, particularly in the Middle East, where limited political freedoms, socioeconomic inequality and state repression pose grave challenges to human rights.
