Description

More than 200 species of the genus Lupinus have been identified, many of which are of great interest. This is due to several factors, including their high protein content, which makes them a source of human and animal food, the possibility of using them as a cover or rotation crop, providing nitrogen to the soil and carrying out its biological fixation, and, finally, the fact that in the species of this genus it is possible to find substances of various types, applicable in medicine and agriculture. This book presents the original results of the authors, obtained in investigations to demonstrate the presence of phenols, flavonoids, and substances with oxidant activity in Lupinus sp., as well as the development of seed scarification techniques by different methods and micropropagation systems in three species (Lupinus campestris Cham. and Schltdl., Lupinus montanus Kunth. and Lupinus bilineatus Benth.). The methodologies described in this book may be useful to students, teachers, and researchers interested in the introduction of the genus Lupinus in Mexico and other countries in the area.
