This study explores the impact of virtual schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic on elementary-level students in eight aspirational districts of North-East India, focusing on marginalized socio-economic groups. Aligned with NEP 2020 and the NIPUN Bharat Mission, the research aimed to (i) understand the seriousness of COVID-19 on children and teachers, (ii) analyze its effects on the education system and learning outcomes, and (iii) identify challenges and opportunities for schools. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from students (Classes VII–VIII), teachers, parents, community members, and government officials.

Teachers faced challenges in adapting to online pedagogies, while parents and communities struggled to support home-based learning. The study emphasized the importance of shared responsibility among stakeholders and the need for inclusive, resilient educational practices.
