Description

The present monograph includes an extensive survey on the importance of free radical damage in the development and progression of COVID-19. A thorough literature review was performed revealing the damage at the molecular, cellular, and tissue level in patients with coronavirus infection. Some of the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the initiation and progression of the most common morphological changes that accompany SARS-CoV-2 infection are defined, namely: mitochondrial and endothelial damage, ARDS, thrombogenesis, etc. Included in the monograph are proprietary studies that emphasize abnormal levels of ROS and a high degree of structural changes in proteins such as albumin. Based on an in-depth analysis, a direct link between elevated oxidized albumin concentration and critically ill COVID-19 has been established. A new scientific understanding of the combination of critical levels of oxidative stress, oxidized albumin, and hypoalbuminemia that put COVID-19 patients in a life-threatening state known as “Oxidative Shock” has been presented.
