Description

Medicine adherence means taking medicine in accordance with instructions. The subject rose to prominence in the 1950s and has been extensively researched since then. However, it has mainly been practical rather than theoretical, hampered by a lack of theoretical support for the act of consumption. Theories of motivation have been applied but these can only analyse intention, not action.

The research recorded in this book uses the lens of Service-Dominant Logic (SDL) to theorise medicine adherence for the first time. SDL reaches right into the act of consumption, analysing not just motivation but also what happens during consumption. As can be seen, intention to be adherent does not always lead to consumption, and SDL allows us to theorise this for the first time. This is transformational to our understanding of adherence.
