Description

This book focuses on investigating the manner in which persons with articulatory- auditory- visual impairments go about medical consultations in the Cameroonian healthcare system. It explores communication challenges faced by persons with any of these impairments and establishes the need for interpreting for these persons in the domain of healthcare. Considering a series of theories, among which; the linguistic theory, the speech act theory, the social inclusion theory, the social exclusion theory, the sociolinguistic theory, interpretative theory and the social identity, conclusive findings were drawn. Interviews were conducted, observations carried out on affected persons as well as documentary research relating to the work carried out. The results revealed ineffective consultations and treatment as well, leading to cries of marginalization and lack of political will to ensure proper medical follow up for these minority classes of persons. Persons with impairments encounter communication challenges, though they could be mitigated through assistive technological tools and provisions for sign language training for medical personnel.
