EU Science Diplomacy in an Evolving World Order

The European Union’s (EU) implicit science diplomacy plays a distinctive role within the broader range of instruments that the EU employs to enhance resilience and promote stability in the European Southern Neighbourhood and globally. This book enriches academic and policy debates on the evolving role of science diplomacy as a unique component of the EU’s toolbox. Bourdieu‑inspired contemporary practice theory is employed to explore the roles performed by managers of EU‑funded projects.

Structural diplomacy and practice theory share several commonalities with much of the evolving understanding of EU science diplomacy. This term denotes a geoeconomic and intellectual propensity among entities both within and beyond the EU to prioritise the research, technological development and cooperation opportunities offered by the European Research Area.
