The book is about the history of political violence in the Maghreb. It identifies the meaning of violence in general and discusses its means, tools as well as, patterns in Maghreban perspectives during colonial and post-colonial periods. It describes the nature of the region as a specific case, and then focuses on the post-colonial period while identifying some past skirmishes and conflicts, which occurred between the Maghreb states themselves.
In the second part, Algeria is displayed as a case study with all political and religious forces, like the rise and fall of President Bouteflika, the failure of the Arab Spring revolution, the communal guards and the anti-riots response. It searches into the People’s Hirak as a new form and the emergence of General Gaid Salah versus the pioneers of Deeper Algeria. It tackles the role of the Franco-Berberists and the MAK as well as, other civil societies with some Islamists. Finally, it summarises those challenges with the emergence of Teboune and the new republic with the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic in general.
