With the prospect of new rapid urban and industrial growth within the framework of countries current economic development model, environmental conditions are expected to deteriorate in the near future. Thus, the circular economy, a new model of sustainable development, is seen as a way to overcome this environmental damage generally observed in industrialized economies. The second edition of the international workshop on sustainable waste management, called “AFRIWASTE-2021”, held on November 24 and 25, 2021 at Nangui Abrogoua University on the main theme “Science and technology in the transition towards circular economy’’, aimed to present the state of the art of current research activities promoting the circular economy and related fields in Africa. This consisted of a sharing of public and private practices in Africa promoting the circular economy, the exploration of the latest concepts and emerging technologies in the waste management sector and the identification of policies at national and regional level and opportunities for international cooperation.
