DEVELOPMENT AND DEMOCRACY IN THE ERA OF THE HEALTH CRISIS

This collective work, coordinated by Aicha El Alaoui, Rachid Bekkaj and Nadia Birouk, examines the multidimensional impacts of the COVID-19 health crisis on development and democracy, with a focus on emerging countries and particularly Morocco. Through nine chapters written by researchers from various disciplines, the book analyzes how the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing inequalities in areas as diverse as food security, the labor market, African regional integration, the digital divide, women’s cooperatives, art and culture, human rights, as well as migration and asylum. The contributors show that the health crisis has revealed the fragility of economic, social, and political systems, while also offering an opportunity to rethink development models. The work advocates for inclusive policy responses, strengthened social protection, equitable digital transformation, and resilient democratic governance in the face of future crises. By combining theoretical analyses, empirical case studies, and policy recommendations, this book makes an essential contribution to contemporary debates on post-COVID development.
