This book examines the role of social workers in preventing and protecting children from sexual abuse, with particular focus on the gap between formally established protection protocols in the Republic of Serbia and their implementation in professional practice. Based on research involving 50 professionals in the social protection system, it explores their experiences and perceptions of prevention, intervention, institutional responses, professional training, and systemic support. The findings reveal significant challenges, including limited access to specialised training, insufficient human and material resources, heavy workloads, and difficulties in applying existing protection mechanisms. The book advocates a shift from predominantly reactive responses towards a proactive, prevention-oriented approach to child protection. It emphasises continuous professional development, stronger intersectoral cooperation and effective implementation of protection protocols. The study provides valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and institutions, while highlighting the need for a more coordinated, sustainable, and professionally supported child protection system.
