Parental involvement plays a critical role in shaping learners’ academic success, yet in many rural communities meaningful collaboration between schools and families remains limited. This book explores how stronger partnerships between parents, teachers, and communities can enrich learners’ academic performance and strengthen the educational experience of children. Drawing on insights from rural schools in South Africa, the book examines the challenges that often hinder effective parental participation, including weak communication between schools and homes, limited supervision of schoolwork, and competing social and economic responsibilities faced by families. At the same time, it highlights practical strategies that schools and parents can adopt to work together more effectively in supporting learners’ development. By combining educational theory with real experiences from rural schooling contexts, the book demonstrates how meaningful parental engagement can motivate learners, improve academic achievement, and build stronger school–family relationships that ultimately benefit both learners and their communities.
