On April 4, 1977, I set off on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). The following April 2, I set off on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). At the time, I did not really realize that nearly 50 years later, I would look back on these journeys as such an important chapter in my life, despite a successful academic career, a wonderful wife and family, and many good friends and colleagues. Why were these journeys so memorable?
In many ways, this book is my attempt to answer this question. While many travel/adventure books focus on mundane details—the daily drudgery—here I highlight the most memorable episodes. Each chapter begins with one such vignette followed by related reflections, which focus mostly on environmental themes. On the PCT, for the most part it was “we” since I often hiked with other through hikers, while on the other hand, the CDT was mostly “I” because there were few other through hikers.
The “vignettes” span a wide range of topics. Some involve side trips, such as the one to a South Lake Tahoe casino for the all-you-can-eat buffet. For the most part, they relate adventures on the Trail or Divide.
